Membership Types and Descriptions

Interior Firefighter:

  • The interior firefighter will be expected to perform all functions related to fire suppression and rescue operations. This may include, but is not limited to, interior fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, car fire suppression, vehicle extrication, etc.
    • Requirements:  Be at least 18 years old, completion of Firefighter One or equivalent, at least 8 in-house drills a year, possess CPR certification, participate in yearly training in specific skills like SCBAs and bailout, as well as complete the annual mandatory membership training.

Exterior Firefighting:

  • Exterior Firefighter: The exterior firefighter does not work in an IDLH environment (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health, such as smoke or hazardous gas). The duties the exterior firefighter will be expected to perform include, stretching hose lines, setting up fire ground operations (lighting, staging area, etc.) collecting accountability tags, and general scene support. 
    • Requirements: Completion of Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations or equivalent, at least 10 in-house drills a year, and complete the mandatory annual membership training.

 

  • Scene Support: The scene support firefighter does not work in an IDLH environment (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health, such as smoke and hazardous gas). Scene support firefighters will be expected to perform skills such as, but not limited to, assisting in stretching hose lines, hitting a hydrant, setting up fire ground operations (lighting, staging areas, etc.) collecting accountability tags, EMS response support, and general scene support. 
    • Requirements: Attend at least 10 in-house drills a year and complete the mandatory annual membership training.

 

  • Junior Firefighter: The junior firefighter fulfills the role of an exterior firefighter with few exceptions: limited response hours, restricted response areas, restricted types of incidents. 
    • Requirements: Must be 16 or 17 years old, be a Glenham Fire District resident, attend at least 10 in-house drills a year, and complete the mandatory annual membership training. 

 

  • Fire Police: Fire police members will direct traffic in the vicinity of an active call and keep unauthorized people/vehicles away from the incident. 
    • Requirements: Attend at least 8 drills a year and complete the mandatory annual membership training. 

 

  • Fire Apparatus Driver/Motor Pump Operator (MPO): The job of the fire apparatus driver/MPO is to get the membership and apparatus to and from the incident safely. The fire apparatus driver/MPO will perform the operational duties required by that apparatus/incident, such as, but not limited to, running the pumps for water supply, drafting water, hitting hydrants, running extrication equipment, working closely with mutual aid in regards to water supply, etc. 
    • Requirements: Must be an active member for at least one year, must possess a NYS Driver's license (Class D or higher), be at least 21 years old, attend monthly apparatus checks, attend 10 in-house drills yearly, and complete the mandatory annual membership training. 

 

All required training will be supplied, free of cost, by the department.
